In the TRIO project, partners are committed to empower citizens of different ages and levels of education, providing an integrated approach of the competences and skills on health, digital and data, empowering them to navigate in the eHealth world.
Through meticulous desk research and insightful interviews, the Portuguese TRIO partners have conducted a comprehensive analysis of the current state of digital, health, and data literacy in Portugal. The findings shed light on several crucial aspects that impact citizens’ ability to engage with health information effectively.
Among the key findings, it was discovered that the competency of “understanding information” was associated with the highest levels of health literacy, with an impressive 75% of respondents demonstrating proficiency. However, “appraising health-related information” emerged as the most challenging aspect, as 34.1% of participants displayed inadequate levels of literacy in this area.
Through interviews conducted with both citizens and experts, it became evident that the rationalization of health information in an accessible, simple, and appealing manner is vital. This approach plays a pivotal role in reducing inequalities in accessing eHealth services, regardless of one’s educational qualifications, income level, or age.
As a conclusion of this analysis, a list of nine skills that the Portuguese population needs to develop has been compiled. These skills encompass various domains and will serve as a guide for empowering individuals and closing the health literacy gap.
